This is not really a trick but more of a puzzle and might even win you a drink or two in the pub!
Remove the Jack, King, Queen and Ace of every suit from a pack of cards and challenge somebody to lay out the cards so that no row or column has two cards of the same suit or value. In other words every row across must have one Ace, one Jack, one Queen and one King and there must only be one Club, one Spade, one Heart and one Diamond.
Try it yourself before reading any further, if you can resist the temptation!
Here is the way top do it ...
Lay out the four Jacks in a diagonal line from left to right. Now do the same with the four Aces but going right to left and ensuring the suits are different on each line. Fill in the remaining spaces with the Kings and Queens taking care to ensure the suits and values do not cross.
There are several solutions but here is one way as an example.
| JACK of DIAMONDS |
QUEEN of SPADES |
KING of HEARTS |
ACE of CLUBS |
| QUEEN of CLUBS |
